Biographical/Administrative Information:The Abercromby Housing Association was in existence between 1949-1975. After the end of second world war, it was decided that expansion of the University was inevitable with projected increases in student numbers and the space required for University installations. More property and building space was therefore required around the present precinct. At this time, many of the mid-Victorian houses in the area provided homes for low income families. The Abercromby Housing Association was established under the chair of Dr. Bertram Nelson to re-house these people by buying property without the precinct border and developing bed-sitters and flats. The Association was administered by the Registrar and the Estate and Development Office, whilst housing management was provided by Liverpool (later Merseyside) Improved House Ltd, who purchased remaining properties at the end of the scheme.
