Biographical/Administrative Information:The Victoria Settlement for women was founded in 1897, at a time when there were many such institutions in major cities. Elizabeth Macadam, after experience in London, became Warden in 1903, with Eleanor Rathbone as Honorary Secretary. The University has made a financial contribution to the Victoria Settlement for a number of years (see Finance Committee, 9 May 1978 Minute 167 and 4 December 1979 Minute 54).
