Biographical/Administrative Information: | The University Air Squadron was formed in January 1941and abolished shortly after the second world war, only to be reformed in 1950. During the second world war all non medical male students were required to train with either the Senior Training Corps, the University Air Squadron or the Naval Division. The establishment of the Guild of Undergraduates was mentioned in Clause 14 of the University Charter: 'there shall be one or more Guild or Guilds of Undergraduates' and it was set up in 1905 (the name being taken from the University of Birmingham). It was decided to have only one Guild which would be a merger of the former Men's and Women's Student Representative Councils and it was to have a male and female president and elected council. In 1965 the positions of male and female President gave way to a President and Deputy President. Latterly the Guild of Undergraduate has become the Guild of Students. |
