Mr Bowsher's grandfather on his maternal side was Colonel Andrew McKie Reid, M.C,T.D.,O.St.J.,F.R.C.S, (1893-1973) who was Commanding Officer of the O.T.C., 1931-1937. Colonel McKie Reid studied Medicine at the University of Liverpool, entering in October 1911, on War service in 1914-19, and graduating M.B.,Ch.B. in March 1921. He was Secretary of the Guild of Undergraduates, 1919-20, President of the Guild of Undergraduates , 1920-1921, and was Lecturer (part-time) - in-charge of the University Department of Ophthalmology, 1947-1958.

According to Colonel McKie Reid's Army Form, he relinquished his commission as Major due to wounds on 3 October 1919; was recommissioned as Captain (with seniority from 10 July 1917) for service with the University of Liverpool OTC on 2 April 1921, but resigned this on 29 November 1922 and was re-granted the rank of Major; he ended up, in 1945, with the rank of Colonel.
