Biographical/Administrative Information:Lectures on Physical Geography were introduced in 1891-92. It had its origins in the Economics Department and amongst the sciences and was considered part of the Faculty of Arts until the creation of the Faculty of Social and Environmental Studies in 1971. The department was founded in 1917 when Percy Maude Roxby was appointed the first John Rankin Professor of Geography in a new Honours School of Geography in 1917, the first to be established in the British Isles. At that time there were only a handful of students and staff. The Department was housed in the Arts Building until it moved to larger premises in 1920-21 to number 10 Abercromby Square, then to number 12 in 1936; soon expanding next door to number 13 and moving finally in 1965 to the new Social Science building, now named the Roxby Building.
