Biographical/Administrative Information:In the early years of the University, the Department of Education was responsible for the provision of a one-year postgraduate diploma in secondary education. A larger number of primary teachers studied at the University Training College, previously the Day Training College, or affiliated colleges such as Edge Hill and Mount Pleasant (Notre Dame). In 1920, the Department of Education took over the responsibilities of the Day Training College. The Institute of Education was created in 1949 as a result of a report by the Government Committee on Training of Teachers and Youth Leaders (published 1945 and presided over by Arnold McNair, then Vic-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool). The Institute was a partnership between the University, the Local Education Authority and Teacher Training Colleges and financed by the Ministry of Education. By 1954, the Institute became an inaugural part of the University, and the William Roscoe Chair of Education was introduced, the existing Chair being renamed the Sydney Jones Chair. After recommendations from the Robbins Committee, the School of Education was formed by the amalgamation of the Department of Education and the Institute of Education in 1965. The Board of College Studies was established in 1975, after the James Report on Teacher Education and Training (1972) had recommended the dissolution of Area Training Organisations, the body that validated courses. The Board of College Studies gave accreditation to courses undertaken at Chester College and the Institute of Higher Education Education became a Faculty on 2 June 1983, and was incorporated Extension Studies. It was dissolved on 1 August 1996 and the Department of Education was transferred to the Faculty of Social and Environmental Studies.
