Biographical/Administrative Information: | The Dentists Act of 1878 and its requirement of an official register of qualified dentists had a direct effect on the teaching of dentistry in Liverpool, encouraged by Dr Richard Caton, then Registrar. The Medical School had appointed a dental lecturer in 1861 but it had not become a significant field of study. The University College thus began to teach Dentistry from the Dental School on Mount Pleasant, originally founded in 1860 by W J Newman. Degree courses were offered from 1905-6, from which time it operated under the Board of Dental Studies, responsible to the Faculty of Medicine. The School moved from Mount Pleasant to Pembroke Place. In 1921, the Dental School was transferred to the University on the same footing as the Medical School and remained independent until the advent of the National Health Service in 1948. The University's Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) has been phased out since 1959 and replaced by a degree programme. |
