Biographical/Administrative Information:Celtic was first taught at the University College as a day class in the mid to late 1880s, and by the end of the College period, a chair had been established. The first Honorary Chair of the Department of Celtic was awarded to Kuno Meyer (1908-11; 1913-14). J. Glyn Davis, appointed as Lecturer in Welsh in 1908, took on the role of running the Department after Meyer returned to Germany, and held the title of Associate Professor from 1924. He was succeeded in 1936 by I.L. Foster. There was a greater emphasis on Welsh under Glyn Davis and Foster than there had been under Meyer, who had more of an interest in Irish. The Department was subsequently headed by G. Melville Richards (1948-65) and D Simon Evan (1966-74) but was finally closed down in 1976. There has been a resurgence of activity in the field of Irish studies in recent years, with the founding of the Institute of Irish Studies in 1988.
