Biographical/Administrative Information:The University of Liverpool Senate agreed to the establishment of a Faculty of Arts with its own Dean and Chairman in 1896 appointing Boards of Studies for the various subject areas at a later date. Throughout most of the inter-war years, the Faculty of Arts was the largest in the University. Student numbers grew to a peak of 1100 in 1932-1933, reflecting the large numbers of students following a career in teaching. At one stage in the 1920s women students in the Faculty outnumbered men. The original Faculty of arts included Education and departments in the now Faculty of Social and Environmental Science. These were separated from Arts in 1971, leaving the subject groups of English Language and Literature; Modern Languages; Classics; History and Archaeology; Philosophy; and Music.
