Summary:

The majority of these papers are those of Principal, later Vice-Chancellor Sir Alfred Dale (1899-1919). As is indicated on the outside of many of the contemporary envelopes, he kept the papers relating to the same subject mainly in individual envelopes : the contents of these envelopes have been left undisturbed in this list except in one or two cases (indicated in the list).

For listing purposes subjects etc. have been grouped as is indicated in the list of contents; the index provides further finding aids to particular papers.

These papers exclude later publications, typescript notes compiled by members of the administrative staff etc. which were later placed in the same storage boxes as strictly these are not papers of the Principals or Vice-Chancellors.

The references given in brackets e.g. (4A/1/1) are the references originally given to these papers on their boxing and transfer to the University Archives in 1968 (in Boxes 3, 4, 4A, 5, 5A, 5B, 6, 6A, 6B, 6C). At the time these papers were not listed except briefly and inadequately referred to on the Records Centre's Union Card Index of transferred records: this list is thus the first list of these papers.

As regards the correspondence of the Principals and Vice-Chancellors see too the series of their Letter Books covering the period 13 Nov. 1889 - 29 Sept. 1927 (ref. S2444, S2320-S2345, S2363). These comprise copies of their out-going letters; it should be noted that the letters dating from 1889-96 are principally addressed to Alfred Waterhouse and relate to his work on buildings for the College. After September 1927 correspondence of the Vice-Chancellors has been maintained in files.

The Records of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool post 1919 relate to the administration of the University of Liverpool, dealings with external bodies and affiliated institutions and ceremonies and events of the University of Liverpool.

This section also contains records relating to the Pro-Vice Chancellor.
