Derby Hall was the successor to Ashton Rathbone and Rankin Halls (in Ullet Road) consequently although on a different site some of the early administrative records for Derby Hall feature in the minute book post dating 1939 (ref. no. P5488/8) when Derby hall was first opened.
Biographical/Administrative Information:A hostel for the male students of University College's Day Training College was opened at 13 Croxteth Road in 1891; it was known from 1899 onwards as the Ashton Rathbone Hostel. With the sudden rise in student numbers after the end of the First World War these premises were found insufficient and gradually property was acquired in Ullet Road: in 1922 these properties were named Rankin Hall (Nos 44 and 46) and Ashton Rathbone Hall (Nos 38 and 40). No 42 Ullet Road was acquired in 1924.These Halls - which were generally known as Rankin Hall from 1928 onwards - remained men's halls (for all faculties etc) until the outbreak of war in 1939; shortly before this most men were moved to the newly-completed Derby Hall, Greenbank. Between 1964 and 1972 the University built a new Rankin Hall on the Carnatic site to replace the Ullet Road site.
